The town
Gravedona is situated in an enchanting gulf, protected to the north by picturesque mountains and allocated in a harmonious way, caracterised by small
squares, lanes and alleyways. With its churches and monuments, testimonies of a past filled with historic and religeous
events, Gravedona is surely one of the
pearls of Lake Como.
It is the ideal place for people keen on water-sports and lovers of peace and tranquillity
There are numerous areas dedicated to sport and to nature-tourism such as the comunal lido with its two swimming pools, a sports centre with tennis courts, football ground and running-track. There are various cycling tracks, a green zone for walks and an
exercise-trail.
The area offers countless alpine destinations and various trails for mountain bikers and trekkers immersed in the quiet of secular woods which together with the magnificent surrounding mountain peaks and the many mountain lakes present unique
views.
The recent reconstruction of the lake-side paving enhances beauty of the town centre.
The town provides every kind of service from the local characteristic shops to nearby
Hyper-markets. Furthermore the general hospital 'Moriggia Pelascini' is situated in
Gravedona.
There are
churches and monuments of great artistic value to be found in
Gravedona. Palazzo Gallio (national monument), built around 1582 on behalf of Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, designed by Pellegrino De' Pellegrini. Built in the feudal centre of Tre Pievi
(Gravedona, Dongo, Sorico).
S. Maria del Tiglio (national monument) baptismal church (XII
century) rebuilt over a pre-existing late roman edifice (V century AC). Inside traces of mosaic paving (V century
A.C.), a large Roman wooden crucifix and frescos dating between XIII-XVI centuries can be
found.
S.Maria delle Grazie
(national monument) called "Il Convento", church and convent of Augustine
friars, erected in 1467 replacing a VI century small chapel of
S.Salvatore. The interior abounds in XVI century frescos of the lombard school which also cover the walls of the
cloister.
SS. Gusmeo and Matteo, built in 1248 on the site where the remains of the martyred saints were unearthed. At first similar to the structure of S. Maria del Tiglio, it was later modified in XVI century. The vault bears a fresco signed by Fiamminghino in 1616 to whom other three great works are
ascribed.
....many reasons for visiting the town
and for going through this site!
